Microlife BodyGem and MedGem Indirect Calorimeters –
A Simple Measurement for Effective Weight Management

The Microlife BodyGem and MedGem devices provide scientifically validated Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) measurements using indirect calorimetry, the gold standard for determining energy needs.

Unlike estimation formulas such as Harris-Benedict or Katch-McArdle, which rely on averages and assumptions, the BodyGem and MedGem directly measure oxygen consumption (VO₂) to determine an individual’s unique Metabolic Fingerprint. This approach accounts for thyroid conditions, medications, metabolic adaptations, and other factors that can significantly impact energy expenditure.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly ADA) recommends indirect calorimetry as the most accurate method for assessing individualized caloric needs in clinical and professional settings.

Why Choose Our Devices Over Estimation Formulas?

More Accurate – Estimation formulas assume metabolic rates based on broad population averages, often leading to miscalculations of 20% or more. The BodyGem and MedGem provide precise, patient-specific data in minutes.

Clinical & Research Validated – The devices have been validated against the Douglas Bag Method and compared with hospital metabolic carts (Sensormedics & Delta Trac), confirming their reliability and accuracy.

Optimized Treatment Plans – By precisely measuring RMR, you can tailor nutrition, weight loss, and nutrition plans based on actual caloric needs, improving patient outcomes.

Addresses Individual Variability – RMR is affected by age, muscle mass, medical conditions, medications, and metabolic changes (e.g., post-bariatric surgery, thyroid dysfunction). Only indirect calorimetry can account for these factors.

Recommended for Healthcare & Fitness Professionals – Used in hospitals, bariatric clinics, sports medicine, corporate wellness, and elite athletic training centers worldwide.

How the BodyGem and MedGem Work

Patient performing BodyGem RMR measurement

1️⃣ The patient breathes into the device for 5-10 minutes while seated in a relaxed state.
2️⃣ The device measures oxygen consumption (VO₂) to determine the precise caloric needs for maintaining metabolic function at rest.
3️⃣ The RMR value is displayed immediately on the device’s LCD screen.
4️⃣ Determine their Daily Calorie Budget with the Analyzer Software. RMR results can also be used without software to customize caloric intake for weight loss, maintenance, or medical nutrition therapy.

For medical professionals, the MedGem is an affordable, FDA-cleared option for accurately determining RMR, allowing for insurance reimbursement and diagnostic use in hospitals, bariatric centers, and clinical research.

For non-clinical settings, the BodyGem offers the same accuracy but is an affordable, reliable option for accurately determining RMR. It is widely used by personal trainers, weight loss specialists, and dietitians to provide premium metabolic testing services.

* Resting VO₂ results are shown on MedGem LCD screen results to warrant insurance reimbursement, BodyGem measures resting VO₂ but does not show this number as it is not required by the FDA.

COVID-19 Update

The MedGem and BodyGem filters are made with 3M Filtrete medical-grade material to ensure the highest standard of safety and performance.
For optimal hygiene and accurate results, a new mouthpiece filter and nose clip must be used for every measurement.

Important Precautions:

  • Do not remove the flow tube—this could expose sensitive sensors that may be damaged by water or cleaning solutions.

  • Avoid submerging the device in water or allowing any liquid to enter the display window, sockets, or flow tube openings.
